D and I met during our senior year in college. We became friends through a mutual friend and soon found ourselves frequenting the same social circles and getting together every Sunday evening to watch The Sopranos. There was a mutual attraction from the beginning, but I was in denial. Long story short: a holiday party + large quantities of alcohol is what finally brought us together. I thought we had ruined our friendship, but to my surprise, D asked me out on an actual date the next night and we were pretty much inseparable from that moment on. Things progressed very quickly for us, and just six short months later, we were engaged (much to the shock of our friends and family!). Looking back, I’m pretty sure we were nuts. We were young, just out of college, jobless and living at home – what were we thinking? But what can I say – when you know, you just know. We were married 10 months later.
It’s hard to believe we’ve been married more than 11 years now. In that time we’ve adopted two dogs; bought, renovated and sold our first house; and bought, renovated and plan to stay in our forever home. We’ve been there for each other through job changes, friend and family deaths, births, weddings and divorces. We’ve had our ups and downs, but through life’s changes, we’ve stuck by each other and many of the hardest times have only brought us closer.
Perhaps nothing exemplifies life’s ups and downs like our journey to build our family. We’ve experienced both the greatest joy of bringing our son into this world and the greatest sadness of losing two babies to miscarriage.
In the words of Gary Allan, life ain’t always beautiful, but it’s a beautiful ride.
